Gargoyle's Quest II: The Demon Darkness is a 1993 action-adventure game for the Nintendo Game Boy. Originally an NES title, this Game Boy port was released exclusively in Japan and China under the name Makaimura Gaiden: The Demon Darkness.

However, this is a full English translation!

Game Overview

  • Genre: A hybrid of side-scrolling action-platformer and top-down RPG exploration.
  • Protagonist: You play as Firebrand (known as Red Arremer in Japan), a gargoyle warrior from the Ghosts 'n Goblins series.
  • Story: Set long before the era of humans, a young Firebrand must save the Ghoul Realm from a mysterious "Black Light" that has destroyed his home and threatens to drain the magic from the land.

Unique Game Boy Features

Unlike the original NES version, this specific port includes:

  • Two New Action Stages: An ice-themed stage in the northern Sittem Desert and a jungle-themed stage in the desert where Dagon dwells.
  • Exclusive Abilities: Completing the new stages unlocks:
    • Homing Fire: An upgrade to Firebrand's basic attack that targets enemies automatically.
    • Astral Projection: A technique that allows Firebrand to release his soul to briefly scout the surrounding area.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • RPG Exploration: Travel through an overhead map of the Ghoul Realm, visit towns, talk to NPC ghouls for information, and collect items.
  • Action Stages: Side-scrolling levels requiring precise platforming. Firebrand can jump, cling to walls with his claws, and hover horizontally using leathery wings.
  • Progression: As the game progresses, you gain items that increase Firebrand's maximum health, jumping height, and hover duration.

The Game Boy version is noted for having larger sprites and a more zoomed-in view compared to the NES original, which can make some platforming segments more challenging due to limited visibility.
