Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (FFTA) is a tactical role-playing game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. While it shares a name and setting with the original PlayStation classic, it features an entirely original story and a more vibrant, "kiddy" art style tailored for the handheld platform.
Story and Setting
The game begins in the modern town of St. Ivalice, where three children—Marche, Mewt, and Ritz—discover an ancient magical tome called the Gran Grimoire. Opening the book transforms their world into a fantasy realm filled with magic and diverse races.
- The Conflict: While his friends enjoy their new lives where their real-world problems (like illness and bullying) have vanished, the protagonist Marche believes the world is an illusion and seeks a way to return home.
- The World: Players explore a version of Ivalice populated by five distinct races: Humans, Moogles, Bangaa, Nu Mou, and Viera.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
The game focuses on turn-based strategy where you manage a mercenary group known as a Clan.
- Turn-Based Battles: Combat takes place on isometric grid-like maps. Victory often requires strategic positioning and clever use of character abilities.
- The Job System: There are over 30 unique jobs (classes) to unlock, ranging from classic Paladins and Black Mages to nicher roles like Ninjas and Summoners.
- The Law System: Each battle is presided over by an invincible Judge who enforces specific "Laws" that forbid certain actions (e.g., "No Fire Magic" or "No Swords"). Breaking these laws results in "cards" and potential imprisonment in the game's jail.
- Mission Structure: The game features over 300 missions, including main story quests and side encounters found in pubs.
Key Features
- Customizable Map: Unlike traditional RPGs, the world map starts empty; players place "area tokens" won from missions to shape the world of Ivalice themselves.
- Ability Learning: Characters learn new skills from their equipment. Once an ability is "mastered" through Ability Points (AP), the character can use it even after changing gear.
- Multiplayer: Two players can connect via a GBA Link Cable to trade items and units or engage in competitive battles.
